Grave of st. przod. Border Guard Antoni Sidełko in the old cemetery

In the old, no longer used cemetery in Mniszek nad Poprad rests the Polish border guard st. przod. Antoni Sidełko, who was killed while on duty at the Podolnik Mniszek border crossing on 1.09.1939.
According to witnesses, at around 5:00 a.m. that day two armoured cars of the Slovak army crossed the Polish border and fired at Polish buildings situated on the Poprad River; a Polish border guard was also killed. After crossing the border, the Slovak vehicles turned back because one of them was damaged by a Polish anti-tank cannon, while the corpse of Antoni Sidełko was taken to the other side of the border and buried in the cemetery in the border town of Mniszek.
In 2012, his family found the grave and set up a cross made of metal pipes with a plaque on it that reads: "ŚP / Antoni Sidełko / st. Przodownik Straży Granicznej / Defender of the Fatherland / died at his post / 1 September 1939 at 4:50 a.m. / Asks for prayer"
The cemetery where A. Sidełko is buried can be reached by going straight along the road after crossing the Slovak border and turning right at the second bus stop. The cemetery is located on a hill, separated from the road by bushes.
