Grave of Home Army soldiers

On 27.10.1943, as a result of the denunciation of Melania Kulakowska (sister of the administrator of the Siechnowicze estate), German pacification units, reinforced by Żabinka gendarmerie and Ukrainian police, struck at dawn on a Home Army partisan unit code-named "Watra I" quartered in Zielenkowszczyzna, a few kilometres from Żabinka, commanded by Lt. Wojciech Zbilut "Jura" ("Wrzos", "Zbigniew Karlicki"). As a result of the battle, 9 soldiers were killed. One seriously wounded died the next day at the AK field post in Zielenkowszczyzna, and two of the more lightly wounded left the unit for treatment. The Germans transported the fallen on the battlefield to Żabinka and hung them on trees near the railway station. After a few days the corpses were removed, taken to the cemetery and buried there near the mass grave of 360 Soviet citizens shot on 27.09.1941. In 1993, after obtaining the necessary permits, work to commemorate the grave was carried out by the Bialskie Przedsiębiorstwo Budowlane on behalf of the Council for the Protection of Struggle and Martyrdom Sites. The inventory of the grave area and the elaboration of the commemoration project were undertaken free of charge by Eng. arch. Andrzej Rószkiewicz. The OPWiM Council was also in constant contact with Czesław Hołub, a former soldier of the AK "Watra I" unit. The ceremonial unveiling of the commemoration took place on 24.10.1993 in the presence of, among others, the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to Belarus - Professor Elżbieta Smułkowa, the Head of the Office for War Veterans and Victims of Repression - Janusz Odziemkowski, the President of the OPWiM Council - Stanisław Broniewski and the Secretary of the OPWiM Council - Andrzej Przewoźnik, as well as a delegate from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The ceremony was honoured by the presence of a Polish Army honour guard. The tomb is not fenced, it is situated at a 90-degree angle to the monument commemorating the victims of World War II. On a terrazzo base is an oblique slab with a rectangular black granite inscription plaque. Behind the slab is an openwork metal cross, made of channel sections joined by circular pipes. The inscription: "Here lie the Polish partisans / soldiers of the unit "Watra" / of the 1st Polesie District of the Home Army / commanded by Lieutenant Wojciech Zbilut "Jura" / fallen in battle against the Germans on 27.10.1943 near Żabinka / Lieutenant Stanisław Murawski "Stanisław" / Sergeant Jozef Kaźmierczak "Bzura" / Corporal Officer Cadet Jan Malik "Thompson" / Shot No. Jan Łagodziuk "Jan" / Sgt. Czeslaw Greń "Grześ" / Sgt. Jozef Woloszynski "Sarka" / Sgt. Edward Radwañski "Edek" / Sgt. Boleslaw NN "Rak" / strz. NN "Todt" / Honour their memory". Underneath, the same inscription was engraved in Belarusian, but without specifying the names. In 2008, thanks to the efforts of the Polish Headquarters in Brest, the monument was thoroughly renovated.
