The construction of the internment centre for Polish servicemen in Târgu Jiu in 1939 was carried out by teams of Polish soldiers interned here earlier and also brought from the internment camp at Caracal. Two camps were set up - one for soldiers and the other for officers. They were isolated - the part of the barracks set aside for officers was surrounded by a double barbed wire fence with densely placed guards. The soldiers' camp was secured in the same way. The number of camps fluctuated constantly. In February 1940, 717 officers were held here, after which the number steadily decreased. In September 1940, when officers were transferred to Călimăneşti, there were about 500 officers. They were handed over to the Germans on 8 February 1941 and transported to the Reich. The soldiers' camp was built on about 24 hectares of marshy land, 4 km west of the town. Fifty barracks were set up for the soldiers and six for the supervising officer cadre. In March 1940, 7,000 soldiers were in this camp, despite the evacuation campaign that was taking place at the same time. A part of the barracks was separated and fenced off for the officers. Several camp barracks, a sundial and an obelisk with an engraved Polish emblem have survived on the site of the present military unit. In the Catholic sector of the Targu Jiu cemetery, 17 soldiers who died in the camp between October 1939 and September 1940 are buried. Their graves are in a common section, which is not separated by a fence. In 1999, the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Bucharest renovated the graves with funds provided by the Council for the Protection of Struggle and Martyrdom Remembrance. Judging from the photographs from 2000, the renovation consisted only of making the borders - the tombstones still remained in a poor condition. In 2021. Armenian Foundation, within the framework of a task co-financed by the Programme of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage 'Sites of National Remembrance Abroad', carried out the renovation of the quarters in Targ Jiu. In the next edition of the Programme, the foundation received a grant for the conservation and restoration of damaged elements of Polish soldiers' memorabilia located at the former camp - a sundial and an obelisk.
