Polish graves in the Cronenbourg Military Cemetery

To the Cronenbourg war cemetery in Strasbourg, where 5,500 military personnel are buried, the remains of 23 Polish prisoners of war who died in the Strasbourg hospital were transferred in 2003 from the neighbouring Cronenbourg Ouest civil cemetery. These were mostly soldiers of September 1939 taken prisoner and held in the German camps Stalag V-D and V-C located in Strasbourg. The exhumations were carried out between 1.09 and 7.11.2003. Two families of the deceased attended the burial ceremony organised at the war cemetery. It was thanks to them and their persistence in demanding that the neglected graves be tidied up that the exhumation took place, the cost of which was covered by the French Ministry of Defence (the burial in the military cemetery was financed by the Strasbourg city authorities). The Council for the Protection of Remembrance of Struggle and Martyrdom verified the grave inscriptions in cooperation with the Polish Red Cross Information and Search Office. The names of 6 Poles who were already resting in the war cemetery and whose graves were then located were also corrected. The war cemetery is looked after by the city and L'Office national des combattants et des victimes de guerre (ONaCVG).
