Vinnytsia is one of the villages near Lviv where bloody battles took place in 1918-1920, first during the Polish-Ukrainian War and later during the Polish-Bolshevik War.

Two soldiers' mass graves were set up in the local cemetery - Polish soldiers were buried in one of them and Ukrainian soldiers in the other. In the 20-year inter-war period, the Polish soldiers' grave was looked after by the "Sokol" Gymnastic Society.

This grave, with a monument topped by an eagle bas-relief, has survived to the present day despite being partially destroyed. The inscription on the pedestal of the monument reads: "Honour / to the heroes / fallen / in defence / of / the Homeland / 1918-1920".
