22.05.1919 r. The 3rd battalion of the 16th IR, commanded by Capt. Andrzej Wajs, fought a battle with the Ukrainian army at Dawidów. This battalion was composed mainly of volunteers from the Tarnów area. The battle was won by the Poles, losing 3 dead and 21 wounded, while the Ukrainians retreated, suffering heavy losses.

The fallen Polish soldiers were buried in the communal cemetery in Dawidów. Their grave has been preserved to the present day.

The original pre-war inscription, placed on the slanted slab of the monument, reads: "Honour / to the Polish heroes / 1918-19".

Higher up is a contemporary black granite slab, funded by the citizens of Tarnów. It features a cross, a military eagle and the badge of the 16th infantry regiment, as well as the inscriptions: "Polegli, abyśmy żyli wolni" and "To the memory of Polish soldiers / of the 16th infantry regiment of the Territory / of Tarnów / fallen in the heroic battle / near Dawidów on 22 May 1919. / Honour their memory // Compatriots / residents / of Dawidów and Tarnów".
