Biography:

Hanka Helen Cieśla Covensky was a Polish-Jewish artist born in Kielce. She spent her childhood in Sosnowiec, where she grew up. She lived through the dramatic experience of the Holocaust. After the end of the Second World War, she and her husband emigrated to the United States, first settling in Detroit and later in Bethesda. She was involved in expressive-abstract painting and her work was characterised by deep emotionality and intense colours. In 1981, her solo exhibition was held at the Detroit Art Institute.
