Helena Suska - doctor and painter

When the war broke out, she was living in Bydgoszcz. Her husband and one daughter managed to escape from Poland, which had been occupied by the Germans; the other daughter ended up in the Ravensbrück camp. Helena Suska got out of Poland after the end of the war and reunited with her family in London, from where they emigrated to Canada in 1951. Here Suska began her art studies at the Banff School of Fine Arts and at evening courses at the University of Alberta. The painter's favourite technique was oil, in which she mostly created semi-abstracts, and the watercolour technique, which allowed her to realistically capture the Canadian landscape - the lakes of the Banff area and the Rockies Mountains, reminiscent of Polish mountain landscapes.

Suska's paintings were shown on the occasion of the show 'Nie masz jak nasz kraj', consisting of Polish songs and dances, prepared by the Polish diaspora in Calgary, in 1958. The following year, the painter showed her works at a solo exhibition in Edmonton - 35 works, oils and watercolours, impressions on Canadian nature. The Canadian Pacific Railway selected several of the artist's works for its collection. Suska's landscapes appealed to Queen Elizabeth when she visited Calgary in 1959 and the artist received a letter from Buckingham Palace and congratulations from the Governor General of Canada. The artist's paintings were exhibited in Edmonton in 1960 on the occasion of Citizenship Day.

The painter was a member of the Alberta Society of Artists. In 1979, she had an exhibition at the Muttard Art Gallery. In 1984, the artist participated in an exhibition of Polish artists prepared by the Polish-Canadian Society in Calgary. The painter's works decorate the interiors of public institutions, including: Edmonton Municipal Government, and are in private collections in Canada.
