Biography:

Henryk Gotlib (1890-1966), born in Kraków, son of Karol and Matilda (née Tilles), painter, sculptor and writer, associated with the inter-war avant-garde and the émigré artistic milieu in Great Britain.

He studied painting in Krakow, Vienna and Munich. After World War I, he was an active participant in the Polish Formist movement. In the 1920s and 1930s, he lived in France, England and Italy, exhibiting his works abroad and co-founding Polish art groups such as Grupa Krakowska and Zwornik.

After the outbreak of the Second World War, he settled permanently in England, where he was a member of The London Group and a lecturer at the Polish College of Art in London. He created still lifes, landscapes and portraits, as well as practising printmaking, sculpture and writing about art. Amongst other things, he published the books Polish Painting and Wanderings of a Painter.
