Biography:

Jan Bułhak (1876-1950), born in Ostaszyn, son of Walery Antoni Stanisław Bułhak (coat-of-arms Syrokomla) and Józefa Haciska h. Roch. He studied philosophy at the Jagiellonian University. In 1905, his wife gave him a camera, which started his passion for the art of photography. He developed his skills in this field in Dresden, studying under Hugo Erfurth. In Vilnius, he ran his own photography studio. In his photographs, often commissioned by the authorities, he documented numerous cities of the Second Republic of Poland. From 1919 to 1939, he headed the Department of Artistic Photography at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Stefan Batory University in Vilnius. From his style was born the term "Bułhakian aesthetics". In 1931 he published the book "Fotografika. An outline of artistic photography'. After the Second World War, he documented the destruction wrought on the country. He was one of the founders of the Association of Polish Artists Photographers.
