Biography:

Jan Ksawery Kaniewski (1805-1867), born in Krasiłów, painter, known primarily as a portraitist and author of works on historical and religious subjects.

A native of Podolia, he was educated at the Krzemieniec Lyceum and the Academy of Fine Arts in St Petersburg. Thanks to an art scholarship, he went to Rome, where he gained recognition, among other things, by painting a portrait of Pope Gregory XVI. In 1846, he settled in Warsaw, where he took up the chair of painting at the School of Fine Arts and later became its director. He also served as co-founder and board member of the Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts. Towards the end of his life, he headed the Drawing Class. He was regarded as a loyalist to the Russian authorities, which was confirmed by both the subject matter of his works and his professional attitude.
