Biography:

Janina Kowalska born in 1908 in Warsaw, daughter of Stanisław and Stefania Zawadzki. She graduated from the M. Konopnicka Gymnasium, and then studied Polish philology at Warsaw University. In 1930, she married Aleksander Kowalski, a hockey player and Olympian. She had two daughters. After the outbreak of the Second World War, her husband was killed in Katyn. During the Warsaw Uprising, she and her children were sent to a camp in Pruszków and then to a village near Opoczno. After the war she returned to Warsaw, where she worked at the Chemical Industry Trade Centre, Arged and Eldom. She fought for plaques commemorating her husband to be unveiled in the churches of St Anthony and St Karol Boromeusz in Warsaw.
