Biography:

Jerzy Charpak (1924-2010) - nuclear and particle physicist of Polish-Jewish origin born in Dąbrowica, near Rivne, in the territory of the Second Polish Republic, active in France and Switzerland. Winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1992 for his contribution to the development of particle detectors. He spent his youth in the Second Polish Republic and Palestine. From 1932, he lived in France. He graduated from the Mines Academy and the College de France in Paris; he attended classes at the Sorbonne with Irene Joliot-Curie. In 1954 he obtained his doctorate on the basis of a thesis on beta nuclear decays. From 1954 to 1959, he took up a research position at the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS). He then took a job at CERN, where he was employed until 1991.
