Biography:

Joachim Karliczek (1914-1993), born in Katowice, son of Karol and Zofia Segieth, swimmer, water footballer and doctor.

In the 1930s he studied dentistry in Berlin. He began his career in water polo at the EKS Katowice club. Already as a teenager, he achieved his first successes - in 1929 he was in the Polish national team for the international matches against Belgium and the tri-match against Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia. In his home country he dominated swimming competitions, winning Polish championships in freestyle at distances from 100 to 1500 m and in backstroke (1930-1937). He repeatedly broke Polish records, especially in the 400 and 1500 m freestyle and in the 100 and 200 m backstroke. In addition, he won the Polish championship with the EKS Katowice team.

In 1936, he appeared at the Olympic Games in Berlin as a member of the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay, but the team was disqualified after his false start.

During World War II, he was conscripted into the Wehrmacht. After 1945, he settled in Germany. In 1950, his sporting achievements were deleted from the Polish annals and he was declared a traitor.
