Biography:

Józef Bernstein (1797-1853), son of Ber Lewin (merchant and owner of a cloth factory in Aleksandrów) and Deborah Szeinfeld, brother of the Warsaw bookseller Karol Bernstein, physician. The Bernstein family, originally from Greater Poland, settled in Warsaw at the end of the 18th century. From 1829, he served as the head of the Jewish Hospital in Warsaw, and during the November Uprising in 1831, he worked as a doctor in military hospitals. He was a member of the Main Welfare Council of Charitable Institutions in the Kingdom of Poland. During his career he published many medical works, especially on ophthalmology. In 1832, he married Dorota Rosen (1808-1839), with whom he had three children: Kazimierz (1833-1902), a physician and graduate of the universities of Dorpat and Berlin; Florentina (1834-1844); and Natalia (b. 1837). After his wife's death, he moved to Paris, where he lived at cité Bergère 403.
