Biography:

Józef Czapski (1896-1993) - Polish painter, illustrator, writer; active in the Russian Empire, Poland and France. He studied law in St. Petersburg and painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and Krakow. During his studies in Kraków, he co-founded the Kapist group. With its representatives, he stayed in Paris from 1924 to 1931. In France, he established a romantic relationship with the poet Sergei Nabokov. Upon his return to Poland, he entered into cooperation with "Głos Plastyków" and "Wiadomosci Literackie". From 1946, he stayed in France, where he worked for the Literary Institute. He lived in two consecutive locations of the institution - in Maisons-Laffitte and in Le Mesnil-le-Roi.
