St Veronica Chapel and Felician Sisters' Branch House in Belz

St Veronica's Chapel and Felician Sisters' Branch House in Belz - a Roman Catholic religious and educational institution run by the Felician Sisters, functioning in Belz between 1867 and 1951.

. History
The Felician Sisters were brought to Belz in 1867, in connection with the town council's division of the school into a male and female institution. The nuns were envisaged as running a school for girls, and the Belz site was the second seat of the nuns in the province, after the Lviv house.

Construction of the school building, together with the nuns' house housing the chapel, began in 1877, on land donated to the nuns, and was completed in 1879. The old school building was adapted into a nuns' house and a chapel was added to it. In 1909, the nuns also took over the newly built Blessed Jakub Strepa Child Care Centre in Belz, which operated until 1935.

The new six-classroom school building was constructed between 1911 and 1914.

During the Second World War, Belz remained under German occupation, and in April 1945, due to attacks by the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), the Felician sisters were forced to leave for the main provincial house in Lviv, and only returned to Belz after a few months. Between 1945 and 1951, the sisters opened a sewing gymnasium in Belz, which was the only vocational school in the area at the time. After the correction of borders in 1951, the Felician sisters left for the territory of present-day Poland, and the authorities in Soviet Ukraine used the former school as a hospital and the chapel as a storehouse. Both parts were rebuilt, including the addition of a second floor above the monastery part, and the chapel was divided into two storeys.

Architecture
The Felician Sisters' buildings consisted of three parts, aligned in relation to each other: the two-storey school building and the chapel adjacent to it from the north, to which the two-storey convent building was attached from the other side. The elevations of the school and the monastery had no architectural divisions. The chapel elevation was framed by a frame division, topped by a gable with concave sides and a triangular abutment. In the wall of the chapel were two large rectangular windows closed with a semicircle, above which was an oval window opening. On the roof of the chapel was a soaring bell turret. Originally, the chapel had a neo-Baroque wooden altar with an image of the Virgin and Child in the main field. It was destroyed when the chapel was closed by the Soviet authorities. Today, the complex of former Felician buildings remains abandoned and in ruins.
