Biography:

Karolina Kózka (1898–1914), born in Wał-Ruda, daughter of Jan and Maria, martyr and Blessed of the Catholic Church. Raised in a deeply religious, poor peasant family, she was involved in parish life, prayer and the activities of religious brotherhoods and associations from a very young age.

She attended primary school in her home village, where she stood out for her diligence and maturity. After finishing school, she helped her family with farm work, whilst actively participating in religious life and pilgrimages.

She died tragically on 18 November 1914 during the First World War, falling victim to violence at the hands of a Russian soldier. Her death was recognised as a martyr’s death, and devotion to her spread rapidly. In 1987, she was beatified by Pope John Paul II.
