The Church of St Apostles Peter and Paul in Antokolė in Vilnius is one of the most interesting churches in the city. It was built from the Pacas' foundation in 1668-1675 according to a design by Jan Zaor. Particularly noteworthy is the rich stucco decoration covering all the walls and vaults of the temple's interior, which was executed in 1674-1686 by the Pacas' Lombard stucco artists Giovanni Pietro Perti and Giovanni Maria Galli.

In 2019, conservation work was carried out on the monumental and very damaged painting depicting 'Farewell to St Peter and St Paul' by Franciszek Smuglewicz, one of the most outstanding Polish painters of the late 18th century. The painting is located in the main altar of the church, to which it was "purchased in 1805 for 200 red zlotys" (J.I. Kraszewski, Vilnius from its beginnings to 1750).

The conservation carried out by the POLONIKA Institute included the performance of research work, treatments to stop the process of destruction of the work's antique matter, and then restoration of the painting's proper technical condition and aesthetic value, as well as protection against further damage.

Financed by the POLONIKA Institute, the work was carried out by a Lithuanian-Polish team of conservators.

On the Lithuanian side, the work was managed by Mantas Matuiza, and on the Polish side by Paweł Sadlej from the company 'Croaton' Conservation and Restoration of Art Objects.

The conservation work was carried out in 2019 as part of the Polonika Institute's strategic programme "Protection of Polish Cultural Heritage Abroad".
