Ziolkowski moved permanently to the Black Mountains after his volunteer service in the US Army, where he began creating the world's largest sculpture. Korczak had managed to mark the contours of the sculpture depicting Crazy Horse during his lifetime when he suddenly died of a heart attack. He was buried at the foot of the monument, and after his death, his loved ones continued his work.
