Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Compton

Variants of the name:

Sacred Heart Church

Originally a Latin cruciform plan church, two storeys, brick built on a reinforced concrete structure, in neo-Gothic style. Two towers climbing 170 feet and two side chapels, giving it a cruciform shape; 180 feet long, 78 wide - 114 feet in the arms of the cross. In the upper - three naves divided by two rows of pillars, 5 altars, choir and pews for 1,300 worshippers; in the lower - altar and pews able to accommodate about 600 people. Later, the upper part was converted into a parish school, and the lower part, its previous location, was turned into a meeting hall.

On 16 July 1907, the parish board of trustees decided to build a two-storey brick school the following year, in the spring. In 1970, the interior of the church was renovated and a chapel was erected in the cemetery. In 1980, the church was renovated and nine years later a disabled entrance and a lift were built. A little later, in 1994, the old stained glass windows, which date back to the origins of the church, were replaced.

Current: façade cladding of coloured cement blocks. Free-standing open-work belfry.

The church was designed in 1956 and construction took place in 1957-59.
