St. Francis Xavier Church in Kaunas

Kaunas Jesuit Church (Rotušės a. 8), built between 1666 and 1725, is a late Baroque temple with a rich history. The Jesuits arrived in the city in 1642, and after the dissolution of the order (1773), the church passed into the hands of the Franciscans, then (from 1823) it was used as an Orthodox church, and during Soviet times as a warehouse and gymnasium. It was only rededicated in 1992 after being returned to the Jesuits in 1990.

Architecturally, it is a three-nave basilica with a distinctive two-tower façade, pilasters, arched windows and Baroque domed towers. The interior, with a barrel vault with lunettes, was largely destroyed in the 20th century. Of the former furnishings, the main altarpiece from the 2nd half of the 18th century, made by Hans Kierner, has survived. The other altars, by the sculptor Anton Dotzrath, have disappeared.

Today, of greater interest to tourists than the church itself is the plaque on the building of the former Jesuit college dedicated to Adam Mickiewicz, who was a teacher here from 1819 to 1823.
