Church of the Holy Cross in Kaunas

The Church of the Holy Cross, located on Green Mountain by the Nemunas, was originally built as a chapel in 1510. The current Baroque church was built between 1685 and 1700 and its design is attributed to Pietro Puttini, architect of the Pažaislis monastery. The temple has a Latin cross plan, two towers and distinctive facades with pediments and statues of saints.

The interior of the church was originally decorated with frescoes and altars thematically linked to the Passion of Christ. In the 18th century, the church was taken over by the Discalced Carmelites, who bought it from the city in 1772. After the cholera epidemics, the monastery was turned into a hospital, and after 1845 it was taken over by the Tsarist authorities. The church had secular functions for decades, including a military warehouse, and the monastery was occupied by the "Danga" factory.

The devastated church was restored to the faithful in 1881, after which it was renovated and equipped with new altars, pulpit, choir and frescoes. Today, among other things, the altars with paintings by Michael Andriolli and the venerated image of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (late 17th - early 18th century) have been preserved. .

Today the Church of the Holy Cross once again has a sacred function.
