The royal game. How did the Poles conquer the chess world?

In our series "Thursday at ease" we invite you to a chess-historical duel! We will talk about the history of chess in Poland, recall the profiles of prominent Polish chess players who achieved success abroad and take a look at the historic victory of Poles at the 3rd Chess Olympiad in Hamburg in 1930.

What happened to Polish players after the Second World War? What other countries did they find themselves in and why did they choose to continue their careers there? Why was it so difficult later to repeat the international successes of the 1920s and 1930s?

There will also be references to the present day at our meeting. We will try to discover what it is about chess that has fascinated people all over the world for hundreds of years, often becoming the main theme of films and series such as 'The Hidden Game' or 'The Queen's Gambit'.

The guide on our chessboard was Dr Andrzej Filipowicz, a Polish chess player, international champion since 1975, international referee, as well as book author, journalist and editor-in-chief of "Magazyn Szachista", participant in a total of 24 chess Olympiads. He was the third Pole in history to be awarded the title of honorary member of the International Chess Federation (FIDE).
