Grave site of Home Army soldiers exhumed from Dziewieniszki

On 29.05.1944, in Dziewieniszki, four soldiers of the 12th and 13th Brigades from the 3rd Home Army Groups were killed in battle with a unit of Soviet partisans. They were Cpl. Ryszard Dudek "Zuch", Cpl. Felicjan Marynowski "Blok", Pvt. N Czajkowski "Czajka" and Sgt. Stanislaw Wasilewski "Gwóźdź".

They were buried at the cross-shaped monument standing on the market square in front of the church. Between 1946 and 1950, this monument was dismantled. Thanks to the efforts of Michal Żwirko, a former resident of Dziewieniszki, the remains of the soldiers were moved to the local cemetery. On 25.08.1993, after a mass in the church in Dziewieniškiai, the exhumed remains of the soldiers were taken to Šalčininkai, where two days later the ceremony of their reburial took place.

The grave is located deep inside the cemetery, next to the wall. There is a large central cross of pale granite and 4 graves of exhumed AK soldiers. In the outer row there are 7 graves of unknown Lithuanian soldiers, covered with slabs of red granite with Lithuanian inscriptions. The Polish graves have concrete crosses with engraved inscriptions containing the personalities of the buried, the graves have concrete borders. The inscription on the central cross reads: "In tribute to the soldiers of the Home Army to the sons of the Vilnius and Nowograd Region who died fighting for the Fatherland. Honour their memory" [inscription in Lithuanian below].
