A quarter in the Catholic cemetery of Polish Army soldiers killed in the Polish-Bolshevik war

In the Catholic cemetery there are two mass graves in which 42 soldiers from the 1st Infantry Division of the Legions are buried. They fell in battle against the Bolsheviks near Wyszki in the period 3-8 January 1920. In the interwar period, the graves were carefully maintained by local people. In the 1930s, a plan was drawn up to arrange the quarters, but this could not be realised due to the outbreak of war. It was not until 1997 that work was done here according to a design by the sculptor Romuald Gibowski. The Council for the Protection of Struggle and Martyrdom Sites subsidised the project. Each of the two graves was fenced on two sides with low wooden railings set on metal supports. In the middle stood a wooden cross stylised with metal elements and a boulder bearing the inscription: "TO THE POLISH LEGIONARIES / FALLEN FOR LATVIA / IN 1920 / PAR LATVUU 1920 G. / KRITUSAJIEM / POLE LEGIONARIEM". The names of those buried were not yet known at the time. The cemetery was solemnly consecrated on 12.07.1998. In 2020. The Foundation in Aid to Poles in the East, as part of a task subsidised by the programme of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage "Sites of National Remembrance Abroad", carried out its renovation. This work has not yet been completed. In agreement with the author of the project, R. Gibowski, 3 sandstone plaques with the names and dates of death of the buried 42 soldiers were placed in the quarters. Each of the plaques bears the heading (in Polish and Latvian): "SOLDIERS OF THE POLISH ARMY OF THE 1ST INFANTRY DIVISION OF THE LEGIONS FALLEN IN THE FIGHT FOR THE INDEPENDENCE OF POLAND AND LATVIA IN 1920". The details of the legionaries were established by employees of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
