Quarters with the graves of Polish soldiers of the 2nd Infantry Division at Bremgarten cemetery

The 2nd Infantry Rifle Division under the command of General Bronislaw Prugar-Ketling, which took part in the fighting in France in 1940, fought in the area of Maîche, Damprichard and Saint-Hyppolite between 18-19 June 1940. After running out of ammunition, it received orders to withdraw to Switzerland, where the division's soldiers, numbering around 13,000, were interned until the end of the war. They stayed in camps that had been set up, working in road and bridge construction, agriculture, industry and other sectors of the Swiss economy. They also had the opportunity to undertake studies. There are graves of deceased soldiers of the 2nd DSP scattered throughout Switzerland. In the common quarters in the Bremgarten cemetery lie 11 soldiers who died between 1941 and 1949; these are graves No. 20-30. In the same quarters there are also two graves of French soldiers. On the plaque located next to the graves is the following text: "MEMORIAL PLAQUE OF DECEASED POLISH / SOLDIERS INTERNED IN SWITZERLAND / AT THE BREMGARTENFRIEDHOF IN BERNE: / HERE LIE THE INTERNED / POLISH SOLDIERS WHO DIED / DURING WORLD WAR 2 / IN SWITZERLAND / HONOUR THEIR MEMORY!/ HIER RUHEN POLNISCHE INTERNIERTE / SOLDATEN DIE WAHREND DES 2 WEITKRIEGES / IN DER SCHWEIZ VERSTORBEN SIND / EHRE IHREM ANDENKEN!/ GRAVE / GRAB NR / 20.
