Polish soldiers' quarters in the cemetery at St. Nicholas Church

In the cemetery next to St. Nicholas Church in Murnau, 85 Poles (79 officers and soldiers, as well as 6 civilians), who died in Oflag VII A Murnau and after the end of World War II, are buried in the Polish soldiers' quarters. Among the buried soldiers are 2 priests, 3 brigadier generals, 4 lieutenant colonels, 5 majors, 10 captains, 10 lieutenants, 26 second lieutenants, 2 ensigns, 1 cadet corporal, 1 corporal, 3 sergeants, 1 canon, 3 senior riflemen, 6 sharpshooters. There are also 2 Lithuanians and 2 Russians buried in the Polish soldiers' quarters. The cemetery is rectangular in shape. Its dominant feature is an obelisk with a statue of a crowned eagle standing on a square paved with stone slabs. The monument was set up in 1949 and was designed by the sculptor Rudolf Pfedder. The monument bears the following inscription: "Żołnierze polscy / zmarli w niewoli / w latach 1939 - 1945 / oraz w latach 1945 - 1947 / NIEDOSZLI - SPOCZĘLI / POWSTANĄ". In 1964 the inscription was supplemented with the inscription: "1 IX 1939 [engraved anchor - symbol of Fighting Poland] / 1 IX 1964 / to the soldiers and fighters / for Poland / Union of War Invalids / of the Polish Armed Forces / in Germany". Along the alley leading up to the monument are Polish graves, which are marked with small stone crosses. Attached to the framing of the grave fields are 44 plaques with the data of those buried, which were placed there in 1995 through the efforts of the Council for the Protection of Struggle and Martyrdom Remembrance. At that time, the OPWiM Council supplemented the commemoration with an information board and a plaque with the names of 25 Polish Army officers - prisoners of Oflag VII A Murnau murdered or who died outside the camp, with unknown resting places. This plaque is located on the back wall of the monument. In 2020. The Bridges Foundation carried out a restoration of the quarters involving, among other things, cleaning and conservation of the stone elements and tidying up the greenery in the quarters. The work was financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage within the framework of a grant from the Minister's Programme "Sites of National Remembrance Abroad".
