Quarters of Polish soldiers killed between 1919 and 1921 in the cemetery in Zakreta

The Zakret cemetery was probably established in the second half of the 18th century. In 1915, the area was divided into plots, in which burials were arranged over time according to the nationality of the deceased. Right at the entrance to the cemetery, on the right-hand side, a Polish section was arranged. Soldiers killed in the Polish-Soviet War found their final resting place here. According to documents preserved in the Lithuanian Central State Archive (LCVA), the Polish section included 53 graves. There was also a detailed design for the placement of the main monument, but it is not known whether it was erected before the outbreak of the Second World War. In 1949, the cemetery was completely demolished - first the German graves were razed, then others. Crosses and monuments were thrown into a nearby pond. The cemetery was turned into a park. An amusement park was located on its grounds. In 2001, the restoration of burials in the cemetery began. The Austrian and German sections were reconstructed first. The reconstruction of the Polish quarters began in 2018. The work is being carried out by the Foundation in Aid to Poles in the East as part of a task co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage programme "Sites of National Remembrance Abroad". So far, an information board and a stone with the inscription 'Quarters of Polish soldiers 1918-1920' have been placed at the site of the planned monument. The work has been delayed due to procedural reasons arising from the current Lithuanian legislation on war burials.
