Polish soldiers' quarters from the years 1918-1920 (in the Janów cemetery)

In the 37th quarter of the Janov Cemetery, the graves of Polish soldiers from the years 1918-1920 and a lofty monument with a cross have been preserved. This section began to be established in 1926 with the aim of consolidating the graves of soldiers who had died in the defence of Lviv in different parts of the cemetery. A total of around 600 soldiers were buried in this section. As part of the clean-up of the war quarters, by 1936 the bodies of 175 soldiers were transferred from the Janov Cemetery to the Cemetery of Eaglets; these exhumations were carried out in two periods: 1925-1926 (155 bodies) and 1927-1936 (20 bodies), bodies were moved from quarters 28 and 37.
At the beginning of the 1970s, the Polish quarters in the Yanov Cemetery were destroyed on the orders of the Soviet authorities. Only about 100 graves and a monumental central cross with an inscription on the wall surrounding the cross have survived. The inscription reads: "To the heroic soldiers from all Polish districts / who died or died of wounds in the defence of Lviv and the Eastern Borderlands / in the years 1918-1920 / erected this monument of glory / by the Polish Society for the Care of Heroes' Graves / in July 1939."
As of 2017. The "Freedom and Democracy" Foundation has been providing permanent year-round care for this plot as part of a task subsidised by the "Sites of National Remembrance Abroad" programme of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. In 2021, this foundation carried out the restoration of the central cross in the quaternary, also under a task subsidised by the aforementioned programme of the Minister.
