A quarter for Polish Army soldiers killed in the Polish-Bolshevik war and soldiers of the Border Guard Corps

In the cemetery on Gorodishchenskaya Street, a quadrangle of Polish graves was arranged in the 20-year interwar period. Soldiers killed in 1920 in battles against the Soviets, exhumed from the following localities, were buried here: Kisze, Kolano, Ostrów, Podświle - outside the cemetery, Przedoły, Przewóz, Rusanowo, Swiła, Uście. In the exhumation protocols preserved at the Lithuanian Central State Archive (LCVA) the names of the fallen were recorded, but for unknown reasons these names were mostly not engraved on the grave crosses - there are only 4 named graves of soldiers killed in 1920 and 7 named graves of soldiers of the Border Protection Corps (KOP) buried here in the 1930s, the other graves are unnamed. Almost all soldiers, who according to archival records were buried here, belonged to the 47th Infantry Regiment of Borderland Riflemen (until September 1919 the regiment was called: 5th Polish Riflemen Regiment, and from 10.10.1921. - 6th Podhale Rifle Regiment). The tombstones were made at the turn of the 1920s and 1930s. The quarters were renovated in 1938. The cemetery is located on the left side of a large metal cross, surrounded by thuyas. It consists of 5 rows of earthen graves, framed by kerbs; the crosses sit on plinths on which inscriptions are engraved. Currently there are 61 graves in the cemetery plot - 50 individual and 11 collective graves - 3 rows with 14 graves each, 1 row with 13 graves and 1 row with 6 graves (part of this row is occupied by civilian burials); KOP soldiers are buried in the 4th row, on their graves there are the same crosses as on the graves of soldiers killed in 1920. There is no central commemoration in the cemetery section, although such a monument was mentioned in the documents concerning the 1938 renovation. The renovation of the cemetery section was carried out in 2017-2018 by the Foundation Aid to Poles in the East within the framework of the task subsidised by the programme of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage "Sites of National Remembrance Abroad". Due to the considerable deterioration of the tombstone material, granite replicas were made.
