Largo House

Under the name Largo House is the initial parachute training centre of the 1st Independent Parachute Brigade, which operated from March 1941 to 1944 in the Scottish county of Fife, near the village of Leven. It owes its common name to the nearby British residence. It was there, in a landscape of Scottish hills and moorland, that the preparation for the special missions that made history for the Polish armed forces in the West began.

Just a kilometre away, in a park at Lundin Links, a 24-metre high parachute training tower was in operation from August 1941. It was the first structure of its kind in the UK, nicknamed the 'Polish tower' by locals not coincidentally, as it was the Poles who inaugurated its operation and were the main training group.

Largo House played a key role in the preparation of soldiers of the 1st SBS and candidates for the cichociemni. Of these, as many as 61 had their beginnings here. Initial training at Largo House was only the beginning of the journey. Subsequent stages included courses at the British Parachute Training School in Ringway, near Manchester, where the first course for Poles started as early as 17 February 1941. From 1944, the training was continued at the Polish Training Centre No. 10 in Ostuni, near Brindisi, Italy.
