Biography:

Leonard Lazarus Rettel (1811-1885), born in Podhajce, son of Jan Rettel and Franciszka, née Lemnicka, political activist, writer, poet, translator and participant in the November Rising. Studied law at Warsaw University. He took part in the November night and the entire campaign of the uprising, rising to the rank of captain. After the fall of the uprising, sentenced to death by the Russians in absentia, he emigrated to France, where he co-founded the Polish Democratic Society. He was friends with Adam Mickiewicz and Fryderyk Chopin, published in the émigré press, and translated literary works.

Involved in the organisation of the Mickiewicz Legion during the Spring of Nations, during the January Uprising he served as a representative of the National Government in Spain. After the death of his wife Natalia in 1880, he settled in the House of St Casimir in Paris.
