The building of the Archives is a former Bernardian monastery, built in the 1730s. The institution's collections include more than twelve kilometres of files, gathered in several hundred sets. The archival holdings include documents from the times of the Halicko-Volyn Principality and Red Ruthenia up to the 1940s. Among them are materials from the local governments of the cities of the Lviv region, the state bodies of the First Republic, as well as the Habsburg Monarchy and Galicia. The archive also collects administrative and ecclesiastical documentation from the interwar period.

The monastery building consists of four wings grouped around a square garth. Unfortunately, due to the problems of considerable moisture and high salt concentrations in the building, the strength parameters of the walls have weakened considerably over the years. This is particularly true of the north wing. Combined with the overloading of the storage rooms, the destructive processes have brought the building to a critical state, threatening the safety of people and stored documents. Consequently, a section of one of the pillars on the ground floor of the north wing collapsed at the beginning of July 2024, which was the signal for urgent works.

As part of the urgent emergency works, a temporary wooden structure was installed to protect a section of the north wing's external wall on the courtyard side. In addition, a structure was installed to support the vault in the ground floor room. These measures are intended to stabilise the building while geotechnical and architectural investigations are carried out and a project for the comprehensive renovation of the building, including structural reinforcement, is developed.
