Biography:

Marcin Zaleski (1796-1877), Krakow-born painter specialising in vedutas. Considered the leading Polish artist of this genre in the 19th century. He depicted mainly panoramas of Warsaw and shots of Kraków and Vilnius.

Initially a decorator in the National Theatre in Warsaw. From 1828, thanks to a scholarship, he worked and studied in Germany, Paris and Rome. From 1830, he was associated with Warsaw. In 1846 he became professor of perspective at the School of Fine Arts. After the school was closed in 1864, he worked at the Drawing Class.

He created city views, church interiors and historical scenes. He also made frescoes in St John's Cathedral and St Jack's Church in Warsaw. He was one of the first Warsaw daguerreotypists. He is buried in the Powązki cemetery.
