Resting place of two soldiers of the 2nd Infantry Rifle Division in the city cemetery

On the night of 19-20 June 1940, soldiers of the 2nd Infantry Rifle Division fighting in France crossed the Swiss border, where they were interned. Two soldiers of the 4th Warsaw Infantry Rifle Regiment who sustained serious wounds: Franciszek Frątczak and Jan Szmitka were transported to the hospital in Saignelégier, where they both died. They were buried in the local cemetery.
According to Swiss regulations, the graves (or common grave) were decommissioned after 25 years. However, on the cemetery wall, the former comrades-in-arms placed a fragment of a stone plaque - most likely from a gravestone - and two name plates with inscriptions and the divisional eagle.
