Place Poland on Kiritimati

The village of Poland is located on the island of Kiritimati, in the Pacific nation of Kiribati. Poland is the fourth largest locality on the island. In 2020, it had a population of over 400. Legend has it that the village is named after its distinguished Pole, Stanislaw Pełczyński. Pełczyński is supposed to have arrived on the island on an American merchant ship, then helped the inhabitants with the construction of an irrigation system. In reality, however, it is highly unlikely that the island was inhabited before the colonisers arrived. It seems more likely that the name comes from the French administrator of the island with Polish roots, Charles Malinowski. In 1995, a Catholic parish of St Stanislaus Kostka, a Polish Jesuit, was established in the village.
