Biography:

Morice Lipsi (1898-1986) - French sculptor with Polish-Jewish roots active in France, Japan, Iceland and Switzerland. Born in Pabianice in Poland under the Russian partition to a Polish-Jewish family. In 1912 he went to Paris to join his brother Samuel Lypchytz, who was staying there. While there, Lipsi settled in the La Ruche art colony and attended the École des Beaux-Arts. From 1930, he married the Swedish artist Hildegard Weber. During the Second World War, in 1942, he moved to Switzerland because of his Jewish roots. His early works betrayed the influence of the art of Auguste Rodin. Between the wars, he created works maintained in the spirit of art deco and classicism. After the Second World War, his art took a definitive turn towards abstraction. Lipsi was then keen to create monumental compositions in stone and volcanic lava.
