Mosaics by Jan Henrik Rosen in the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis

The mosaics designed by John Henry Rosen in The Cathedral Basilica of St Louis (The Cathedral Basilica of St Louis) in Saint Louis, Missouri, were created between 1960 and 1967 and were part of a huge ensemble of mosaic decorations adorning this church, executed according to designs by various artists (including Hildreth Meière) over several decades.

Saint Louis Cathedral was built between 1907 and 1914, with a formal consecration in 1926, and the church was designed by the architectural firm of Barnett, Haynes and Barnett. Archbishop John J. Glennon, the initiator of the construction, decided on a Byzantine stylistic costume (it was modelled mainly on St Mark's Basilica in Venice and the Hagia Sophia church in Istanbul), as he wanted his cathedral to stand out from other church buildings in the USA, among which various variations of Gothic prevailed. A consequence of this choice in terms of architecture was the decision to decorate the interior of the church with mosaics - an undertaking that took several decades to complete, as it was not completed until the 1990s.

In preparing the mosaic designs, Rosen collaborated with The Ravenna Mosaic, a mosaic decoration company located in Saint Louis, with which he maintained a very good relationship for many years, not only professionally but also privately. This was probably facilitated by the fact that the owner of the company, Paul Heuduck (1882-1972), was German, born - like Rosen - on the Old Continent, back in the 19th century; Paul's son, Arno (1917-1988), ran the company with his father (and after his death independently).

Jan Henry Rosen designed the mosaics in the central dome of the church, on the north arch supporting this dome, on the east wall and on the west wall of the church.

The mosaics in the central dome of the church, in the four fields of the canopy, depict:

  • "Holy Trinity in the type of the Throne of Grace" (with the inscription: glory be to the father to the son and to the holy spirit ["Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit"]),
  • "The vision of Ezekiel" (with inscription: the word of the lord came to ezekiel and the hand of the lord was upon him ["The Lord addressed a word to Ezekiel and the hand of the Lord was upon him"]),
  • "The Apocalyptic Woman" (with inscription: and a great sign appeared in heaven a woman clothed in the sun ["A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed in the sun"]),
  • "Ascension of Elijah" (with inscription: a fiery chariot and fiery horses parted them both asunder and elias went up to heaven ["A fiery cart appeared with fiery steeds and parted them both: and elias ascended to heaven"]).

The inscriptions are (sometimes slightly modified) verses taken from scripture.

The images in the canopy of the dome are accompanied by cherubs with the word 'saint' in four languages (Latin, English, Greek and Old Church Slavonic): "sanctus", "holy", "hagios", "swjatyj" (the last two written - in Greek and Cyrillic - respectively), while the tambour depicts eight archangels and eight angels with the coats of arms of individuals and institutions, rivers of paradise and constellations.

The northern arch of the dome (the 'Last Judgement Arch') is decorated with mosaics: Christ the Judge with the Deesis scene (the Virgin Mary and St John the Baptist), with St Peter, the Good Villain (Dismas) and the Resurrection of the Bodies, and St Michael the Archangel, St Odilon and the Damned (1961-1962). The east wall shows the prefiguration of the Last Supper - the Old Testament Passover Supper - and the west wall shows the institution of the Blessed Sacrament ('Last Supper', 1967).
