Maria Konopnicka, a Polish poet and novelist, was born on 23 May 1842 in Suwałki. She is considered to be one of the most outstanding Polish writers. She was famous for her diverse works such as novellas, poems and poems. Her works dealt with important socio-political issues and promoted patriotic attitudes. She was also an author of children's literature. Maria Konopnicka's best-known works include the novella 'Mendel Gdański', the poem 'Rota', and the literary fairy tale 'O krasnoludkach i o sierotce Marysi'.

The poet died of pneumonia on 8 October 1910 in the sanatorium "Kisielki" located in Lviv. She was buried on 11 October 1910 in the Lychakiv Cemetery, also in Lviv. The funeral, organised by Maria Dulębianka, was attended by nearly 50,000 people, including representatives of the State. It became a kind of patriotic manifestation. Maria Konopnicka's tombstone is located in the pantheon of distinguished compatriots, precisely in the 2nd roundabout, 5th Avenue. The original tombstone bust was made by Luna Drexlerówna. It was destroyed during the Second World War and then reconstructed in the post-war period by Ukrainian sculptor Volodymyr Skołozdra. A fragment of Konopnicka's poem 'At the Cemetery' was engraved on the plinth.
