Matt Urban's headstone in Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia

Matt Urban's headstone at Arlington National Cemetery. A native of Buffalo, Urban was an American soldier of Polish descent who took an active part in World War II. He fought in Algeria, Tunisia, Sicily, France and Belgium. He was awarded a total of 29 decorations including the Medal of Honour in 1980 and the Legion of Honour for his extraordinary bravery during combat. After the war, he was heavily involved in the life of the Polish American community. It is interesting to note that he was the most honoured American soldier in history. In addition to his gravestone monument at Arlington National Cemetery (section 7, grave number 40), his memory was perpetuated by naming a sports centre in Holland (Michigan) after him, one of the streets, and a Polish community centre in Buffalo - the Matt Urban Center.
