Tombstone of Tadeusz Machalski and Maria Machalska

A gravestone in the form of a stele laid on a base. It was made of very highly polished syenodorite (?) which gives the rock a very deep black colour (although at close range it is clearly broken up by lighter minerals) and its texture is medium-grained (commercially known as Absolut Black granite). The stele has a simple cuboidal shape with a gently splayed top. In addition, simple cube-like elements have been placed on both sides. The stele is mounted 2 cm from the back edge of the base, which has a circular opening for a vase in the upper central plane at the front. The stele has no bas-relief decoration and much of the face is occupied by a legible inscription (1) in sans serif majuscule of varying sizes.

Inscription:

1. Ś † P / Z KORYBUT - DASZKIEWICZÓW / MARIA MACHALSKA / 1897 -1972 / Ś † P / TADEUSZ F. MACHALSKI / GENERAŁ W. P. / 1892 –1983 //.

Comments on the state of preservation and visible restoration:

The very good state of preservation of the stone itself (with no apparent weathering or dirt firmly integrated into the ground) the stele owes to the resistant material from which it was made, but technological errors made during the installation of the gravestone cause it to lean forward (the object is still stable, it does not yield to pushing), which in the future may pose a risk of falling. The glossy quality of the stone indicates that the object was set in the relatively recent past. Tombstone covered with a light layer of dirt, dust. Significant amounts of dried grass fragments are deposited on both horizontal and vertical planes and in the vase opening. Covered in several places with bird droppings. The inscription, although legible, has virtually no gilding (only small fragments), and what makes it legible is the cream-coloured underpainting. There is no loss of form or scratches on the object. The very narrow jointing around the elements is largely damaged. The tombstone is set almost centrally on the precast concrete block (the left side is set 1 cm from the edge and the right side is flush with the edge of the concrete block). The rear edge of the precast block is raised above the surface of the ground, which obviously destabilises the gravestone and is most likely the result of the precast block being set too close to or even above where the coffin rests, or being installed too quickly on freshly dug ground that shifts and settles. There are also broken remains of a candle on the base. The stele is located very close to the gravestone on the right side at a distance of about 10 cm. The surroundings of the gravestone are overgrown with field grass and ivy vines, which are beginning to overgrow the object. The state of preservation indicates that the object has not been looked after for a long time
