Tombstone of Władysław Konstanty Vasa

In Rome's Sacre Stimmate di San Francesco church, away from the eyes of church visitors, in a chapel near the presbytery, there is a tombstone of Wladyslaw Constantine Vasnò - son of King Wladyslaw IV Vasa, who was hitherto almost unknown in the literature. Currently, as part of its research activities, the Polonica Institute is carrying out a project, the authors and executors of which are Hanna Osiecka-Samsonowicz, PhD, Professor of the Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences (project leader) and Paweł Migasiewicz, PhD, which is to result in a monographic study of the monument.

Archival research was carried out in Roman archives: Biblioteca Casanatense, Archivio Storico del Vicariato di Roma, Archivio Storico Capitolino, Archivio di Stato di Roma and Biblioteca Hertziana. The queries, together with the documentation produced, have significantly increased knowledge of the circumstances of the tombstone's creation and of the Roman period of Vladislav Constantine's life. Among other things, the researchers found descriptions of the funeral ceremony of Wladyslaw Constantine, held thanks to the generosity of a friend of the deceased and the founder of his tombstone, Cardinal Giovanni Francesco Albani (later Pope Clement XI). The funeral ceremony was held with great pomp, attended by the papal band and the envoys of Innocent XII. As the researchers point out: "the source materials found have not been taken into account in the scientific literature to date, and our search was hampered by the many different versions of Ladislaus Constantius' surname occurring in the archives: Vasnò, Vasenò, Wasenau, Wazenau, Wasenhoff and others, as well as various forms of first names".

The research into the tombstone and the life of Ladislaus Konstantin is complemented by an analysis of the work attributed to the tombstone's author, Lorenzo Ottoni. The photographic documentation made during the research stays in Rome and comparative analyses with Ottoni's sculptures in Roman churches and museums will provide material for further scientific publications.

Hanna Osiecka-Samsonowicz, PhD, Professor at the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences - a graduate of the University of Warsaw, since her graduation an employee of the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences, currently a professor. Her research interests include the history of 16th-18th century architecture, the visual setting of Baroque secular and sacred ceremonies, and cultural history, with particular emphasis on Polish-Italian and Polish-Saxon artistic relations in the modern era. She has held scholarships from the Italian Government, the Czech and Hungarian Academies of Sciences, the Centro Nazionale delle Ricerche, the Lanckoroński Brzezie Foundation, the Accademia dei Lincei and the Institute National de l'Art. She has presented the results of her research in numerous publications and at national and international conferences. She is the winner of the Rev. Prof. Szczęsny Dettloff and Prof. Dr. Jerzy Łoziński awards of the Association of Art Historians, as well as the Hanna Szwankowska competition "Varsaviana 2016-2017".

Sculptor of the Baroque in Poland", written under the supervision of Professor Mariusz Karpowicz, Ph.D., and awarded the Prime Minister's Award and the Rev. Prof. Szczęsny Dettloff Award by the Association of Art Historians. Subsequently, he undertook long-term postdoctoral studies at the École Pratique des Hautes Études in Paris. Since 2015, he has been a researcher at the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences, where he received his habilitation degree in 2023 on the basis of the book 'Laudatissimus Phidias noster. Sculptor Johann Riedel SJ (1654-1736) between Bohemian guild tradition and French academic art'. Winner of numerous competitions for national and international scholarships, including the Lanckoroński Foundation (London, 2007; Rome, 2012), the Government of the French Republic (Paris, 2007), The Robert Anderson Research Charitable Trust (London, 2008), and the Foundation for Polish Science (Columbus Programme, Paris, 2012/2013). He specialises in the history of modern sculpture and architecture. His research particularly covers artistic relations between France and Central Europe. He is the author of books and dozens of articles and the scientific editor of several collective studies. Dr Paweł Migasiewicz is the author of two books published by the Institute Polonica: "The Church of Notre-Dame-de-Bonsecours in Nancy" (with Jakub Sito, 2023) and "The Tomb of the Heart of King John Casimir in the Church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés in Paris" (2019).
