Description and history: The history of the obelisk goes back to the hunt at the foot of Lilienstein Hill. August II the Strong decided, as the first Saxon ruler, to conquer this characteristic mountain in the Sächsische Schweiz (Saxon Switzerland) on 26. July 1708. According to accounts, today's south ascent was established especially for him.

On the occasion of this climb, the King of Poland (at the same time Elector of Saxony) August II the Strong ordered an obelisk to be erected on the eastern corner of the mountain. The obelisk bears the monogram of the aforementioned ruler: AR (Augustus Rex).

The object stood until the 1960s. Most probably the upper part was destroyed by a lightning strike and the rest fell victim to vandalism. Thanks to the Ilse Bähnert (Tom Pauls) Foundation in Pirna, the obelisk was rebuilt in honour of the 300th anniversary of the conquest of Mount Lilienstein by Augustus II the Strong. The initiative was supported by the Saxon Switzerland National Park, and the work was carried out by the Dresden stone workshop of Andreas Hempel. The obelisk was ceremonially unveiled on 22 August 2008.
