Unveiling of the monument to Marshal Foch in Lille.

From Lille reports (PAT): Last Sunday was dedicated to honouring Marshal Foch. Crowds of former veterans flocked to Lille from all over the area to attend the unveiling of the Marshal's monument. After the service, celebrated by Mgr Lienert in the presence of civilian and military officials, General Weygand, representatives of the Allied countries and associations of former veterans, General Weygand gave a speech in which he praised the memory of the late commander.

"One wondered," said General Weygand, "on what his never-wavering confidence in the successful outcome of the war was based. Some wanted to see in him a mystic. There was nothing of the sort in this great man whose common sense bordered on genius. The secret of his strength found its source in his profound wisdom and in his faith in God and in the destiny of France."

Then Minister of War Gen Maurin, discussing Marshal Foch's activities, emphasised his feeling for humanity when, by agreeing to the truce proposed by the enemy, he thus spared many human casualties.
Lille, 24 May (PAT). A ceremony was held in front of Marshal Foch's monument in the presence of ambassadors and MPs: Poland, Italy, Romania, Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia, 25,600 former veterans.

Nearly a thousand flagpoles lined up in 10 rows in front of the monument. Before the end of the ceremony, a small group of participants began to raise demonstrative shouts, which were immediately suppressed by the veterans.
