The Hańskis' Palace in Wierzchownia

In 1800, Jan Hanski started the construction of the palace in Wierzchownia, which was completed by his son Waclaw. The building, maintained in the Empire style, consists of a central part and two wings. In 1810, the Hański family burial chapel was erected nearby. From 1819, the estate belonged to Ewelina Rzewuska, wife of Wacław. The palace became famous thanks to Honorius Balzac, who, as Ewelina's second husband, worked on many of his works there.

From 1922, an agricultural school operated in the palace, later transformed into a branch of the Kyiv Agricultural Institute. Today it houses an agricultural college. In 1959, a Balzac memorial chamber was opened, and in 1995 the Zhytomyr Regional Museum of Honorius Balzac began operating. At the end of the 1980s, a major renovation of the palace was carried out.
