Piotr Kowalski (1927-2004) - French artist, sculptor, architect and mathematician with Polish roots, active in Sweden, Brazil, the USA and France. He was born in Warsaw, where he spent his youthful years. From 1946, he lived abroad: first in Sweden, then in Brazil, the USA and finally in France. He studied architecture, physics and mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge (Massachusetts) (USA) and then at the University of Göttingen. After an architectural apprenticeship in New York with Leoh Ming Pei, he moved to Paris, where he worked as an architect. From the 1950s onwards, he realised sculptures. His most important works include the Porte Sud and Pascal Square in the La Défense district of Paris and the Axis of the Earth in Champs-sur-Marne.
