Biography:

Piotr Antoni Steinkeller (1799-1854), born in Kraków, son of Piotr Steinkeller and Józefina, née Frey, merchant, industrialist and economic activist.

After his father's death, he left for Vienna, where he received a commercial education and served an apprenticeship in banking. He returned to Krakow in 1818, taking over the management of the family business. He soon began investing in the Republic of Cracow, establishing, among other things, a coal mine and a zinc works near Jaworzno. He pioneered modern social practices such as employment contracts and the construction of housing for workers, and initiated the construction of the first mining hospital in Jaworzno.

In 1825 he moved to Warsaw, where he established a trading house, invested in mines and steelworks in the Dąbrowa Basin and developed river shipping. He was one of the originators of the Warsaw-Vienna railway, but as a result of financial problems, his activities ended in bankruptcy in 1849. Steinkeller returned to Kraków, where he died of a heart attack.

He was married twice: to Aniela Anthonin and Maria Lemańska. He had sons Joseph, Alfred, Alexander, Edward and Henry Arthur, and a daughter Paulina.
