Polonics in the collection of prints at the State Museum of the History of Religions in St. Petersburg. Publication

The aim of the project was to publish in print a catalogue of the graphic polonics stored at the State Museum of the History of Religions in St Petersburg in the single section Western Religions - Graphic Collection. This was a hitherto unrecognised group of objects originating from Poland, all the more important because it concerns mainly graphic works from the 19th century of a diverse nature: from high art objects to devotional prints. The compiled collection includes 394 catalogue cards.

As a result of Dr Tomasz Jakubowski's research work, 429 objects were selected and published in the form of a catalogue preceded by an extensive scientific introduction. The collection is unique and was created thanks to the author's collaboration with the staff of the Graphic Arts Department of the State Museum of the History of Religions in St Petersburg.

The material presented is very diverse. It includes folk woodcuts, religious oleo-prints, postcards and holiday cards, often illustrating customs and village life, engravings with depictions of historical figures and scenes or images of saints, but also photographs, graphics showing sacred buildings.

This is the first such large and comprehensive attempt in Polish literature to systematise objects of a very diverse type housed in one section of a specific institution. Many of them were previously unknown and are being published for the first time. A significant group of the presented objects are oleo-prints, often located outside the "high art", marginalised, which still do not have professional studies in Polish, although they are an extremely interesting part of graphic production in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The catalogue presented here is a representative cross-section of this type of production, a large and unprecedented collection on such a scale. Attention is also drawn to other categories of prints whether woodcuts or occasional postcards. These materials illustrate how various Polish documents and mementos of the past ended up in distant places as a result of the turbulence of history. In turn, the book is important because the unique material it contains illustrates the Polish fate.

The publication is available for sale.
