St Stanislaus Polish Chapel in Florida

The wooden chapel of St Stanislaus in Brooksville was built in 1915 by a small group of Polish immigrants who settled in the northern part of Hernando County.

Mass was celebrated once a month by priests from St Leo's Abbey. The building burnt down in 1929 , but the local community quickly built a new chapel, which still exists today. It is a simple wooden structure in the "Old Florida" style , with shuttering boards.

The Great Depression, poor soil and disease led to many residents leaving the settlement in the 1930s. Shortly after the Second World War, regular weekly services in the chapel ceased.

Since then it has remained in the care of St Anthony the Abbot parish in Brooksville . Mass is now celebrated here annually on All Saints' Day or All Souls' Day. In the adjoining cemetery rest the early settlers and their families.

For decades the care of the chapel and cemetery was provided by the Buczek and Badowski families . From 1966, Franciszek Buczek helped his aunt, Wiktoria Buczek. After her death in 2000, at the age of almost 100, the funds left by her were enough to maintain the facility for another 20 years.

In 2022 the local Highlanders Circle No. 79 , with the approval of the St Petersburg diocesan curia, undertook the renovation of the building .

Time of construction:

1915 (first chapel); after 1929 (present chapel)
